New to Earthing imageIn the large majority of cases, people begin to feel better soon after they start Earthing.  They adjust easily to the Earth’s energy.  Remember that sleeping grounded or sitting inside your home or office with bare feet on an Earthing mat is the same as being barefoot outside.

Someone very ill or saddled with various symptoms may feel the difference dramatically, but someone with radiant health and who sleeps well may not feel any significant difference.  In that situation, since connecting to the Earth helps to preserve and perpetuate good health, Earthing should thus be regarded as an effortless, natural form of anti-aging and preventive medicine.

Yet another person with a health problem may not be as aware of improvement as someone else. One older man adamantly told us he didn’t feel any difference but then admitted that he didn’t get up at night to urinate as frequently as before, and often slept right through the night. That’s a sign of deeper sleep and probable reduction of prostate inflammation, and welcome benefits.

For some people, grounding can feel unusual in the very beginning.  There may be some tingling in the body, as is sometimes experienced when strolling barefoot along the wet sand at the beach or on a dew-moistened plot of grass in the morning.  The tingling usually disappears within a few days.   Tingling is probably due to improved circulation.

And for some other people, Earthing in the very beginning may generate some flu-like symptoms that include malaise, achiness, headache, a foggy mind, tiredness.  Muscle cramps and disturbed sleep might occur.  Our observations suggest that a healing, normalization process is underway because of Earthing’s ability to improve blood flow and oxygenation of the tissues as well as restore a natural electrical state in the body. Systemically, more efficient cell repair and function takes place, promoting a clear-out of wastes and toxins. Such detoxification could manifest in any of the symptoms just mentioned. Nerve fibers may function better, resulting in unaccustomed sensations.  Earthing has given the body additional resources to clean up and try to return to normal. Energy is expended in this process, so people sometimes feel initial fatigue before feeling increased energy.

These responses vary from person-to-person. They generally ease off within a week or two.

When starting Earthing, be sure to stay well hydrated.  Drink plenty of water to help the body flush out wastes more readily. Moreover, the better hydrated the body, the more conductive it is. Many individuals are dehydrated. We have found that dehydration can impair the effect of Earthing in the body

Should the initial discomfort be too intense, we usually recommend stopping Earthing at night. Resume with shorter exposure, like a half-hour or an hour during the day. Exposure can then be gradually increased over a week or two, allowing you to adjust to grounding, and to sleeping comfortably.  It may take a bit of experimentation in such cases.

For individuals with Lyme disease, we strongly recommend following this go-slow approach. The reasons are explained in another Earthing report.  This approach may also be helpful for individuals who believe they are electro-sensitive.

If you take medication, be alert to the possibility that as the physiology improves because of Earthing the dosage level of your medication may need to be adjusted. You could experience signs of overdose. If you do, see your doctor. Do not reduce medication on your own without consulting your doctor. For a detailed article on Earthing and medication, click here.

If you take a prescription blood thinner, consult with your doctor before starting Earthing because Earthing has a blood thinning effect as well. Your doctor may never have heard of Earthing but should be informed by you about the possibility of a compounded blood thinning effect and the need to monitor the blood closely.

A European study published in 2011 indicates that Earthing affects thyroid function. More research is clearly needed, but quite a few people on medication for underactive thyroid (hypothyroid) have told us they have been able to reduce their dosage of medication after starting Earthing.  Some reported feeling palpitations, a common sign of excess thyroid hormone.  Our interpretation is that Earthing improves thyroid function and thus the prescribed level of medication may become excessive. If you take thyroid medication and start Earthing, be alert to the possibility of medication overdose. If that should occur, consult with your physician about adjusting your medication level.

Each of us is different and pursue different lifestyles. That’s why experiences can differ widely when starting Earthing. Benefits can come smoothly or after some discomfort in the beginning.  They can come quickly and dramatically, or subtly and gradually.  Some people may not feel any benefits, or begin to feel benefits after they increase their grounding time.  It is impossible for us to predict, or tell you precisely, how Earthing will unfold in your particular situation.
